About Centerfield

What's special about Centerfield?

Our family has always loved pastured eggs fresh from local farms. Unfortunately, we found that pastured eggs were not always in supply, came from farms far from Lexington, KY and often pastured in name only.

Centerfield's goal is to reliably provide its local community with delicious, pastured eggs using methods which are as sustainable and natural as possible.

Centerfield is an egg farm based in Nicholasville, Kentucky. We make sure the animals at Centerfield are extremely happy, and are constantly trying to understand what they're telling us. Each flock of chickens is given a two-acre plot of land to roam and work with. Great Pyrenees dogs allow the chickens to enjoy the woods and pasture free from predators. The goats keep the fence lines and tree lines clear so that the chickens can enjoy these food-abundant areas. All in all because our animals are so happy with their freedom-filled lifestyle, our eggs are filled with flavor that cannot be found anywhere else.

  • 55 acre family farm located off Marble Creek Lane in Nicholasville next to the Kentucky River.  Only 11 miles from Lexington.
  • 3-4 flocks of 500 hens each plus several dozen roosters.
  • Farm is managed entirely by 3 families living on the land: A Farmer’s family, a Pastor’s family and a Pyrenees family.
  • Average pasture and woodland area per chicken: 168 sq. ft.  (Compare to HFAC’s Certified Humane definitions of 2 sq. ft. for “free range” and 100 sq. ft. for “pasture raised”.)
  • State licensed and commercially insured.

  • Forest's Edge:  In addition to giving our hens ample pasture land, Centerfield makes great efforts to give our hens ample woodland, too.  We believe they are happiest on the forest's edge with its diverse foliage because domestic chickens are descended primarily from the red jungle fowl.

  • Sustainability: Pastured feeding and laying areas are rotated seasonally and rely upon renewable resources such as solar power and rainwater.

  • Complete Freedom: All flocks are raised on the farm from 1-day old chicks and protected by dedicated Great Pyrenees guard dogs for unrestricted movement 24 hours a day.

Forest's Edge
At high noon, when summer temperatures are hottest and the hawk is circling in their blind spot, are hens found grazing out in the pasture? No way! Pastures are great for dawn, dusk and cloudy days, but we've found that hens often prefer to hunt and peck within the insulated and diverse foliage of the forest's edge.

So Centerfield makes great efforts to send fence lines deep into the forest.  Some seasonal creeks are crossed which provides for even more diverse pecking grounds.

Sustainability
Each coop is located at a remote wood line where pasture meets forest and equipped with rainwater collection and solar panels.  This means the hens can enjoy the freshest water and a dependable power source.  The two acres surrounding each coop are also rotated for two years and then left fallow and completely unoccupied for one year.  This ensures the land can fully recover in preparation for the next flock!

Electric golf carts are the primary, day-to-day transportation for feeding hens and collecting eggs - several buckets of feed go out to each coop and several baskets of eggs come back.  And it's all powered by sunshine.

Complete Freedom
The Great Pyrenees dogs protect the chickens from all types of predators. They are also great companions to the farmer.
